Customized Pet Vaccination Plans
At BBVA/DVA, we follow the most up-to-date recommendations for pet vaccinations from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the American Academy of Feline Practitioners (AAFP).
Canine Vaccinations
Most dogs receive a distemper-adenovirus type 2-parvo (DA2P) injection every three years. All dogs that come in contact with other dogs, even casually, need twice per year kennel cough vaccines. We recommend Lyme vaccinations for any dog that does not test positive on the annual Lyme test.
Rabies vaccination is required by law in Massachusetts for companion dogs at a 1- or 3-year interval, depending on their rabies vaccine history. Based on your dog’s exposures, we may recommend the leptospirosis vaccine or the canine influenza vaccine.
Feline Vaccinations
Most cats receive an FDRC (feline distemper, rhinotracheitis, and calicivirus) injection every 3 years. Your cat is vaccinated for rabies every year with a new, safer, and gentler vaccine. Cats that live indoors need fewer vaccinations.
Outdoor cats need more vaccines, as well as other preventive care, due to the environmental hazards they face. If your cat is allowed outdoors, we administer a yearly feline leukemia vaccination. We make specific vaccination recommendations according to the lifestyle of your cat.
Birds, Exotics, and Pocket Pets
While certain birds, exotics, and pocket pets may not require vaccines, there are other preventives and health protocols to discuss with each of these varying species. Visit our Wellness page for more about caring for these special pets. Contact BBVA/DVA to schedule a wellness exam and create a plan for ongoing care of your unique pet.
